MySpace, which has just sacked 500 employees and slashed its international operation, is a prime example of this trend - having changed its focus in the last 12 months from social networking, to entertainment and music only.
Indeed, Mike Jones, MySpace’s chief executive, admitted to The Telegraph at the end of last year, that MySpace had finished being a social network and direct rival to Facebook.
Jones said the bold statement: “MySpace is a not a social network anymore. It is now a social entertainment destination.”
The number of active users may still be falling, and News Corporation may be prepping the site for sale, but Jones, did reveal yesterday that since the worldwide rollout of the new MySpace, there have been more than 3.3 million new profiles created, with particular interest around the new entertainment-themed topic pages.
The same refocus has been forced upon the likes of Bebo too, the British-born former one-time darling of social networks. Since being bought from AOL by venture capital fund, Criterion Capital Partners, it is now focusing on being a more fun platform which allows users greater levels of control over their profile and self-expression.
